Understanding Cranes
Posted by Alex on October 20, 2011
Cranes hold the responsibility of raising, shifting and lowering varying loads using an apparatus supported on an overhead track. It’s doesn’t sound that entirely complex in theory, but intricate details go into the proper functioning of cranes.
One of the more important details is safety, not just for the person maneuvering the crane, but also for the crane to have a longer, and more effective lifespan.
Thanks to technology, cranes have evolved significantly. When you see them on construction sites—or even in the streets, you may not notice immediately how modern they look. Would it surprise you to find out that cranes have been in use for the last 2,000 years?
Those outside the material handling industry may not know that cranes exist in a wide variety of forms, each tailored for a specific purpose. For example, you can find small jib cranes used inside workshops or tall-tower cranes for the construction of skyscrapers. You can even find floating cranes for building oil rigs and salvaging sunken ships, too. While your purpose may not be to rescue the Titanic, perhaps you are in the business of loading and unloading freight for construction or demolishing waste at modern incineration plants. Whatever the need, there’s a specific crane with unique functions to complete your project.
Thanks to technology, cranes have come a long way in evolution. When you see them on construction sites or even in the streets, you may not notice immediately how modern they look. But would it surprise you to find out that cranes have been in use for the last 2,000 years?
